Cardiac sonography sits at the intersection of clinical skill, technology, and direct patient care. As a cardiac sonographer, you are the person who produces the images a cardiologist relies on to diagnose and treat heart disease, your work has immediate, tangible impact on patient outcomes.

It is a highly specialised role with strong and growing demand across Australia, genuine career progression, and the kind of daily variety that keeps the work interesting. No two patients are the same. No two scans are identical. For graduates who want a hands-on clinical career with real depth, it is one of the most compelling paths available in healthcare.

No. The 3-Part Echocardiography Program is a clinical training program that creates a pathway for you to enter an accredited university qualification. It does not replace a postgraduate sonography degree, it prepares you for one, giving you the practical skills, clinical placement hours, and support letter required to gain entry into an ASAR-accredited postgraduate program.

Most students complete their university degree concurrently with Part 3, where they are already working and earning at Heartscope.

No. Part 1 is designed as a foundation; it assumes no prior knowledge of echocardiography. You need a bachelor's degree in a science or health-related field, basic computer skills for the online portal, and a willingness to commit to two in-person days per week. That is it.

Our head trainer Reena works with students from a wide range of health backgrounds. The students who tend to do best are not the ones with the most prior knowledge — they are the ones who stay curious and committed throughout.

Yes. Part 1 is designed to be manageable alongside other commitments. It runs two in-person days per week with online self-paced theory, so many students continue part-time work during this stage.

Part 2 is full-time — five days per week, 9am to 5pm at Heartscope clinics, so you will need to plan ahead for that transition. Part 3 is also full-time, but you are earning a salary throughout, which changes the picture considerably.

Intakes are deliberately small with a maximum of 4 to 5 students per cohort. This is what makes the training as effective as it is, but it also means places fill quickly. We run three intakes per year and recommend registering your interest well ahead of the intake that suits you.

The eligibility interview is the primary step — academic background matters, but attitude and commitment are what we are really looking for. Our cohort size also means every student receives personalised time with the trainer and very hands-on guidance throughout. You are never just a number in the group.

From the start of Part 1 to the completion of Part 3 is approximately two years — 16 weeks for Part 1, 16 weeks for Part 2, and 72 weeks for Part 3. Parts follow sequentially, and Part 3 runs alongside your postgraduate university studies.

By the time you complete the program, you will have a Scope Institute certification, a Heartscope professional reference, your ASAR registration, and significant real clinical experience.

The 3-Part Echocardiography Program, combined with your ASAR-accredited postgraduate sonography qualification, prepares you for a growing and well-rewarded clinical career.

Graduates who complete both the Scope program and their university qualification go on to work as:

  • Cardiac Sonographer in private cardiology clinics and specialist practices
  • Cardiac Sonographer in public hospital imaging departments
  • Mobile and community-based cardiac sonographer
  • Trainee progressing to Senior Sonographer and Clinical Lead

With experience, you can pursue further specialisation in paediatric echocardiography, transoesophageal echo, stress imaging, 3D echo, and cardiac research.

Part 2 is your first full immersion in a real clinical environment. Three days a week you are at Heartscope clinics scanning real patients alongside senior cardiac sonographers — working on the same pathologies you are studying each week, so theory and practice are always reinforcing each other. The other two days are dedicated to cardiac physiology training — ECG and Holter monitoring, blood pressure assessment, and patient management. Every day is hands-on and purposeful.

You will always have a senior sonographer present and guiding you throughout Part 2. The goal is to progressively build your confidence and skill under close supervision — you are not expected to scan independently at this stage. Feedback on your technique comes directly from the sonographers you work alongside, as well as from reporting cardiologists who review the scans. It is a genuinely supportive environment.

Part 2 is a clinical training placement. There is no salary during this stage — that changes in Part 3, where you join the Heartscope team as a working, salaried member. Planning for Part 2 as a full-time commitment without income is something to factor into your preparation. Many students use their Part 1 period to save ahead for it.

It is a brief, straightforward conversation with the Heartscope team to confirm you are ready to begin Part 3. There is no technical test or assessment. It is an opportunity for both you and Heartscope to feel confident about moving forward together. The interview is a short conversation, not an additional hurdle. If you have put in the work through Parts 1 and 2, Part 3 is yours.

Completing Part 2 builds on your Part 1 foundation with 16 weeks of real clinical experience — a meaningful credential in itself. Combined with Part 3 and your postgraduate sonography qualification, graduates go on to work as cardiac sonographers in private clinics, public hospitals, and community-based cardiac services, with progression pathways into senior leadership, and specialist roles in paediatric echo, transoesophageal echo, stress imaging, 3D echo, and cardiac research.

No. Part 3 is not available as a standalone enrolment. It is the final stage of a structured three-part program, and each part builds directly on the one before it. The clinical skills, patient experience, and competency you develop in Parts 1 and 2 are what make you ready to work independently at Heartscope in Part 3.

You arrive at your Heartscope clinic and begin performing echocardiograms as part of the clinical team. In the early weeks, a senior sonographer is nearby and available throughout. As your competence and confidence grow across the 72 weeks, you take on greater independence, progressing from supervised scanning to semi-independent, then fully independent practice. The progression to independence is gradual and deliberate. You build it at a pace that keeps both you and your patients in good hands.

You will also perform advanced procedures including stress echocardiograms and bubble studies and prepare preliminary reports for review by reporting cardiologists. It is real clinical work, not a simulation.

Your clinical placement support letter is provided at the very start of Part 3 — not at the end. This means you can begin your application to an ASAR-accredited postgraduate sonography program from day one of this stage, allowing your university studies and your clinical placement to run concurrently.

ASAR is the Australasian Sonographer Accreditation Registry, the professional body that accredits sonographers across Australia and New Zealand. Registration as a student sonographer with ASAR is a prerequisite for commencing Part 3 and is typically required by your university course at the same time. We will walk you through the registration process well before your Part 3 start date.

Part 3 and your postgraduate university qualification are designed to run at the same time. Your clinical placement at Heartscope fulfils the supervised clinical hours (IBL) required by your university program, so you are not doubling up on time, you are covering both simultaneously. Your Scope clinical placement support letter is what confirms your placement for university purposes.

You enter the workforce as a qualified, experienced cardiac sonographer with a Scope Institute Certificate, a Heartscope work reference, your ASAR registration, and your postgraduate degree — ready to work from day one.

Many Scope graduates find opportunities through the Heartscope network directly. Others move into public hospitals, specialist practices, or flexible locum roles across Australia. Career progression leads to Senior Sonographer, Clinical Lead, and Sonographer Educator roles.

This intensive course is specifically designed for medical doctors, offering advanced echocardiography training over 11 days (spread across 11 weeks). The program combines theoretical knowledge relating to how to perform advanced echocardiograms with practical application, rapidly enhancing your diagnostic capabilities.

Reena, our most senior cardiac sonographer and head trainer educator, conducts these sessions. With extensive experience in echocardiography and teaching other doctors and ED physicians, Reena ensures that all participants receive expert guidance and instruction.

We welcome Emergency Physicians, Anesthesiologists, Cardiologists, and other AHPRA-registered medical professionals looking to enhance their critical care echocardiography skills and knowledge.

Doctors in Australia need to be registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) to practice and participate in this program. This ensures that all participants are qualified medical professionals practicing within Australian healthcare standards.

It means your qualification is recognised by employers and other registered training organisations (RTOs) anywhere in Australia. The course content and assessment standards are set at a national level, ensuring a high-quality, portable qualification.

Yes. Upon successful completion, you will be issued an official Statement of Attainment (for single units like First Aid) or a Certificate (for full qualifications like Cert III), which is your formal proof of qualification.

Our courses use a competency-based assessment model. This means you are assessed through a combination of written knowledge tests, quizzes, and practical skills demonstrations throughout the course. There isn’t one single final exam; you progress by demonstrating your skills and knowledge at various stages.
