RPL & Credit Transfer Policy

Scope Institute – RPL & Credit Transfer Policy
Recognising Your Skills and Experience. Scope Institute acknowledges that valuable learning occurs in many settings, not just in a formal classroom. This policy outlines how you can have your existing skills, knowledge, and formal qualifications recognised to potentially reduce the amount of study required for our nationally accredited (HLT-coded) courses. This policy applies only to our accredited qualifications and not to our non-accredited professional development programs.

1. Policy Principles

Our approach to recognition is based on the following principles:

  • Compliance: We adhere to the requirements of the Standards for RTOs 2015 and the principles of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
  • Fairness & Validity: All applications are assessed fairly, transparently, and consistently. The evidence you provide must be valid, sufficient, current, and authentic.
  • Accessibility: Information about RPL and Credit Transfer is made available to all prospective students prior to enrolment.
  • Student Support: We provide clear guidance and support to students throughout the application and assessment process.

2. Credit Transfer

2.1 What is Credit Transfer?

Credit Transfer is the process of recognising formal qualifications (Certificates, Diplomas, Statements of Attainment) that you have already completed with another Registered Training Organisation (RTO). If a unit of competency you have previously completed is an exact match (same code and title) or has been deemed equivalent to a unit in your chosen Scope Institute qualification, we will grant you a credit. This means you will not be required to undertake training or assessment for that unit.

2.2 How to Apply for Credit Transfer

  1. Indicate Interest: Notify us of your intention to apply for Credit Transfer during the enrolment process.
  2. Submit Evidence: You must provide a certified copy of your official academic transcript or Statement of Attainment issued by the previous RTO. A certified copy is a photocopy signed by a Justice of the Peace or other authorised person, confirming it is a true copy of the original. We will also require your USI to verify the record.
  3. Assessment: Our assessors will review your documentation to confirm the validity and equivalence of the units.
  4. Outcome: We will notify you in writing of the outcome. If successful, your training plan and course fees will be adjusted accordingly.

2.3 Fees for Credit Transfer

There is no fee for applying for or being granted Credit Transfer.

3. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

3.1 What is RPL?

RPL is an assessment process that evaluates the skills and knowledge you have gained through informal and non-formal learning. This includes work experience, on-the-job training, volunteer work, and life experience. Unlike Credit Transfer, RPL is not based on formal qualifications. It is a process of demonstrating that you already meet the performance requirements of a unit of competency, making formal training for that unit unnecessary.

3.2 How to Apply for RPL

  1. Self-Assessment & Application: Contact us to request an RPL Application Kit for your chosen qualification. This kit will include a self-assessment tool to help you determine if RPL is a suitable pathway for you.
  2. Gather Your Portfolio of Evidence: This is the most critical step. You will need to collect a range of evidence to demonstrate your competence. The evidence must be your own work and directly relate to the unit requirements.
  3. Competency Conversation & Practical Demonstration: An assessor will review your portfolio and then conduct a "competency conversation" (a structured interview) with you. They may also ask you to perform specific tasks or skills in a simulated environment to observe your competence directly.
  4. Outcome: The assessor will make a final judgement. If you are deemed competent, you will be granted RPL for the unit(s). If gaps are identified, the assessor will advise you on the specific training you need to complete.

3.3 Fees for RPL

RPL is a rigorous assessment process that requires significant time from our qualified assessors. The fee for an RPL assessment is $250 per unit of competency. The total fee for a full qualification is capped at $1,500.

4. Providing Evidence for RPL

The evidence you provide for an RPL application must meet the "Rules of Evidence":

  • Validity: The evidence must directly relate to the specific unit of competency you are applying for.
  • Sufficiency: You must provide enough evidence to allow the assessor to make a confident judgement. Quality is more important than quantity.
  • Authenticity: The evidence must be your own work and verifiable.
  • Currency: The evidence must demonstrate your current skills and knowledge. Generally, this means it should be from the last 2-3 years.

Types of Evidence may include:

  • Direct Evidence: Observation of your work, practical demonstration of skills.
  • Indirect Evidence: Portfolios of work (e.g., reports you have written, projects you have completed), videos or photos of your work.
  • Supplementary Evidence: Third-party reports (e.g., a letter from your supervisor confirming your duties), job descriptions, performance appraisals, certificates of attendance from non-accredited training.

5. Appeals

If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your RPL or Credit Transfer application, you have the right to lodge an appeal. The appeal will be handled in accordance with our comprehensive Complaints and Appeals Policy.
