Clinical Rotations
Observe cardiac tests and see how patients are cared for at a real cardiology clinic.
You train hands-on with the same ultrasound equipment used in Heartscope's cardiology clinics.
Applied Echocardiography is Part 1 of our career pathway. Over seven weeks, you'll build on your basic scanning technique and learn how images and measurements help assess a patient's heart. You'll consider why an examination was requested and how the findings relate to the patient's symptoms.
In practical classes, your educator will help you refine your images, check your measurements and work through common cardiac conditions. You'll also practise organising the findings into a preliminary report for review.
The course includes one clinic lesson at a working Heartscope cardiology clinic, where you'll watch experienced sonographers carry out patient examinations and have supervised probe time.
You must complete Basic Echocardiography or equivalent practical echo training approved by Scope Institute. We'll review any external training before enrolment.
You must have completed an undergraduate degree in science or a related health field. University entry requirements are assessed separately.
Plan for two four-hour classes each week, online study and one clinic lesson during the course.
You'll need basic computer skills and access to our learning portal between classes.
You must be able to bring a suitable adult volunteer who agrees to be scanned for training at every practical session.
Build on the views you already know and learn how to use them in a clinical assessment.

Ventricular function, cardiomyopathies, pericardial disease, valvular heart disease, aortic pathology and adult congenital heart disease.
Apply key echocardiographic measurements and haemodynamic principles in a structured assessment.
Develop a systematic approach to reviewing image quality and recognising normal and abnormal appearances.
Understand the structure and purpose of preliminary reporting within appropriate professional boundaries.
Connect classroom learning with patient workflow, clinical observation, professional conduct and ongoing supervised development.
On successful completion, you'll be able to recognise common cardiac conditions and explain the images and measurements that support your findings.
You'll be able to prepare a preliminary report for review and identify findings that need further assessment.
Your Scope Institute certificate and course logbook will record the practical learning and clinical observation you've completed.
If you successfully complete the course and pass the progression review, you can move on to Part 2: Clinical Rotations.
Three planned intakes each year.
Yes, unless we approve equivalent hands-on training you've completed elsewhere. You must also have completed an undergraduate degree in science or a related health field.

Chief Cardiac Sonographer and Educator. Reena holds a Diploma of Medical Ultrasonography (Cardiac) from ASUM and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122). She co-founded Heartscope and has over 15 years of experience across several public and private cardiology practices.
Reena has trained more than 50 cardiac sonography students. She teaches every Scope Institute echocardiography cohort in small groups, giving individual feedback and following each student's progress.
More about ReenaCompleting Basic Echocardiography with Scope Institute gives you a $1,800 credit towards this course. The credit lasts for 1 year after you complete Basic Echocardiography.
