How it works
1Do the theory online
Work through the module at your own pace before class. Most people take 2 to 4 hours.
2One practical session
About 3 hours of hands-on training and assessment in a small group with a clinical educator.
3Get your certificate
Pass with your theory complete and we email your Statement of Attainment within 1 business day.
How you're assessed
You're assessed hands-on in the practical session: you demonstrate each skill to your trainer, including 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin at floor level and use of a training defibrillator, and respond to simulated scenarios such as anaphylaxis, choking, bleeding and fractures.
The online theory covers the knowledge side and includes short quizzes you complete before class. Your trainer coaches you through every skill before it's assessed.
The CPR assessment is performed at floor level and is physically demanding. If that's difficult for you, tell us before you book and we'll talk through what adjustments are possible. Who this course is for
Provide First Aid is the general workplace certificate, so the room is usually a mix: designated first aid officers, teachers, coaches and childcare staff, healthcare and allied health workers, disability and aged care support workers, hospitality, retail and construction crews, and parents who want to know what to do.
You don't need any first aid experience. We teach every skill from the beginning.
Booking for a workplace? Victoria's OHS Act 2004 requires employers to provide adequate welfare facilities, and WorkSafe Victoria's compliance code says that includes first aid kits and suitably trained first aid officers. The code also sets out how many your workplace should have.
Education and care roles may require HLTAID012 instead. Check with your regulator, or ask us. Before you attend
Enrolment, your details and your USI are all handled in the student portal when you sign up, so there's no paperwork to bring on the day.
- Finish the online theory before your practical session
- Create a free USI at usi.gov.au if you do not have one
- Wear clothes you can kneel and move in
- Minimum age 14
Frequently asked questions
How long does the course take?
2 to 4 hours of self-paced online theory, then one practical session of about 3 hours. Once both are complete, your certificate is emailed within 1 business day.
Is HLTAID011 the right course for my workplace?
For most workplaces, yes. WorkSafe Victoria's compliance code and Safe Work Australia's model code both name Provide First Aid as the minimum for workplace first aiders. If you're only refreshing CPR, take
HLTAID009.
How long is my certificate valid?
Generally accepted for 3 years. The Australian Resuscitation Council recommends refreshing the CPR component every 12 months with the 2-hour
HLTAID009. If you opt in, we'll remind you before your CPR and first aid renewals are due.
Can you train our whole team at our workplace?
Yes. For groups of 10 to 20 per session we bring the trainer, manikins, AED trainers and all assessment materials to you, anywhere in metropolitan Melbourne, and can also schedule evening and weekend sessions. Every group quote includes a free WorkSafe-compliant first aid risk assessment.
Request a group quote.
Do you supply workplace first aid kits?
Yes. We supply WorkSafe-compliant base kits and customise add-ons to suit your site, such as adrenaline auto-injectors, asthma relief inhalers with spacers, AED supplies and signage, and burns modules. We quote kits alongside your training, so mention them when you enquire.
Do you run online or virtual first aid courses?
No. The assessment requires hands-on skills, so all training and assessment is face to face. Only the theory is completed online beforehand.
What if I don't pass?
If you don't meet a requirement on the day, we arrange another attempt with you. Trainers coach you through every skill before it's assessed, and you get feedback as you go.
