Right Heart, PE and Pericardial Emergencies
Assess right-heart function, PE-associated findings, pericardial effusion and tamponade.
You train hands-on with the same ultrasound equipment used in Heartscope's cardiology clinics.
If you can already obtain the standard transthoracic views, this course covers left ventricular function in more detail. You'll refine your images and measurements, then use clinical cases to examine global function, regional wall motion and ischaemic patterns.
Your educator will review your technique and interpretation. You'll consider how image quality affects the assessment, how findings relate to the patient's presentation and when a comprehensive examination is needed.
You should already be able to obtain the standard views. Our Cardiac Ultrasound: Core Practice course covers them, as do comparable hands-on courses elsewhere.
You'll need to attend our Melbourne training centre. The practical sessions can't be completed online.
On completion, participants will be able to:
Refine machine settings, probe position and patient position for consistent LV assessment.
Use EPSS, MAPSE, Simpson's biplane, MR dP/dt and MPI, with attention to the strengths and limitations of each method.
Review the LV segment by segment and relate abnormalities to coronary territories.
Work through common acute and chronic ischaemic presentations using structured cases.
Combine acquisition, measurement and case interpretation while recognising when comprehensive echocardiography is required.
The main learning areas are outlined below.
Cardiac anatomy and physiology, the imaging modes, and the standard windows.
Cardiac anatomy and physiology, the imaging modes, and the standard windows.
Cardiac anatomy and physiology, the imaging modes, and the standard windows.
Cardiac anatomy and physiology, the imaging modes, and the standard windows.
You'll practise assessing global and regional left ventricular function.
You'll use educator feedback to improve your images and interpretation.
You'll learn the limits of focused assessment and when a comprehensive examination is needed.
You'll receive a Scope Institute certificate recording the training you've completed. This is non-accredited professional training. It isn't CPD-accredited, but doctors can self-record eligible hours.
This course is not currently accredited by a specialist college and no CPD points are attached to it. Applications are in progress with the bodies listed below, and this page will be updated as each is confirmed.
No accreditation should be assumed until it is stated here. The certificate issued on completion documents the contact hours completed and the topics covered.

Chief Cardiac Sonographer and Educator. Reena holds a Diploma of Medical Ultrasonography (Cardiac) from ASUM and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122). She co-founded Heartscope and has over 15 years of experience across several public and private cardiology practices.
Reena has trained more than 50 cardiac sonography students. She teaches every Scope Institute echocardiography cohort in small groups, giving individual feedback and following each student's progress.
