Cardiac Ultrasound: Core Practice
Learn standard cardiac views with supervised scanning and individual feedback.
You train hands-on with the same ultrasound equipment used in Heartscope's cardiology clinics.
The course gives supervised echocardiography training and clinical case discussion to doctors in acute, critical care and perioperative practice. You'll work on getting reliable images, interpreting findings alongside the patient's presentation and recognising when further imaging or specialist assessment is needed.
During practical sessions, your educator will review your scanning technique and help you improve image quality. Case discussions show how echo findings can help answer bedside clinical questions. Take the complete program or choose individual courses suited to your experience and clinical responsibilities.
You don't need prior echocardiography experience.
You'll need to attend our Melbourne training centre. The practical sessions can't be completed online.
The program includes five courses: two full days of Core Practice, a half-day LV course and three focused full-day courses. Follow the links for each course's curriculum.
Learn cardiac anatomy, imaging principles and equipment controls, then practise the standard transthoracic views with individual feedback.
Practise focused bedside views and assess ventricular, pericardial and fluid-status findings in shock. Review supporting lung ultrasound and the limits of focused assessment.
Refine LV image acquisition and assess systolic function, regional wall motion and ischaemic patterns through guided practice and clinical cases.
Assess the right ventricle, PE-associated findings, pericardial effusion and tamponade through clinical cases, and learn the limits of echo.
Practise native and prosthetic valve assessment and Doppler. Review aortic pathology and when specialist assessment is needed.
You'll complete 35 contact hours of guided scanning and case-based learning.
You'll practise a consistent approach to focused cardiac assessment.
You'll learn to recognise important findings and when to follow bedside echo with further assessment.
You'll receive a Scope Institute certificate recording the training you've completed. This is non-accredited professional training. It isn't CPD-accredited, but doctors can self-record eligible hours.

Chief Cardiac Sonographer and Educator. Reena holds a Diploma of Medical Ultrasonography (Cardiac) from ASUM and a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122). She co-founded Heartscope and has over 15 years of experience across several public and private cardiology practices.
Reena has trained more than 50 cardiac sonography students. She teaches every Scope Institute echocardiography cohort in small groups, giving individual feedback and following each student's progress.
