Trainer coaching a group of employees as they practise CPR on manikins on a meeting room floor

For on-site first aid training, we send a trainer to your workplace, anywhere in metropolitan Melbourne, with the manikins, AED trainers and assessment materials. You provide a room with clear floor space. Your staff do the theory online beforehand, then complete one hands-on practical session together for HLTAID011 Provide First Aid or HLTAID009 Provide CPR. Sessions are for groups of 10 to 20 people.

Why do Victorian employers train staff in first aid?

First aid is part of an employer's legal duty in Victoria. Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, employers must provide, so far as is reasonably practicable, adequate facilities for their employees' welfare. WorkSafe Victoria's compliance code First aid in the workplace says that includes first aid kits and suitably trained first aid officers.

As a minimum, the code says those officers need a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) from a registered training organisation. It also recommends CPR training every year and renewing first aid qualifications every three years. A Statement of Attainment doesn't expire, but employers often make those intervals a requirement.

Victoria hasn't implemented the model WHS laws, so this code applies here rather than Safe Work Australia's model Code of Practice. Our guide to how many first aiders your workplace needs covers the numbers.

Which first aid courses can we run at your workplace?

We deliver two nationally recognised units on site. You can book either for your team, or both if some people need the full certificate and others only CPR. The enquiry form takes a head count for each.

  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid is the full workplace certificate. It covers CPR and AED use as well as bleeding, burns, fractures, asthma and anaphylaxis.
  • HLTAID009 Provide CPR covers CPR and defibrillation only. It's used as the yearly CPR update between three-yearly first aid renewals, and it also works on its own for staff who want CPR skills without the full certificate.

Both are taught and assessed in line with current Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, and each leads to a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment issued by Scope Institute (RTO 45946).

What do we bring, and what does your workplace provide?

Everything used for training and assessment comes with the trainer: manikins, AED trainers and all the assessment materials. Your workplace provides a room with clear floor space.

The floor space matters because CPR is practised and assessed at floor level, and everyone does two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin. Ask your team to wear clothes they can kneel and move in. If you're not sure a room will work, describe it when you enquire.

Floor-level CPR is physically demanding. If anyone will find it difficult, tell us before you book and we'll talk through what adjustments are possible. Participants also need to be at least 14.

How does the online theory work for a group?

Each person completes the theory online at their own pace before the practical session, so there's no group theory class. Most people take two to four hours for the HLTAID011 module and about an hour for HLTAID009.

The theory covers the knowledge side of the assessment and includes short quizzes. Enrolment, personal details and Unique Student Identifiers (USIs) are all handled in our student portal when people sign up, so there's no paperwork on the day. Anyone without a USI can create one free at usi.gov.au.

Ask your team to finish before the session. We can't issue anyone's certificate until they've completed both the theory and the practical.

How does an on-site first aid session run?

It's one practical session of about three hours for HLTAID011, or about two hours for HLTAID009, including short breaks. A clinical educator runs it with your group in the room you've set aside.

  1. The trainer demonstrates and coaches each skill before it's assessed, and people practise with feedback as they go.
  2. Each person is then assessed on the skills, including two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin at floor level, CPR on an infant manikin and use of a training defibrillator.
  3. They also respond to simulated scenarios, such as anaphylaxis, choking, bleeding and fractures for HLTAID011, or a cardiac arrest for HLTAID009.

If someone doesn't meet a requirement on the day, we arrange another attempt with them. Everyone's Statement of Attainment is usually emailed to them within one business day of completing both parts. With each person's written consent, we can send a copy to their employer.

How do you book on-site first aid training?

Send your details through our workplace group training enquiry form. We match your preferred dates with a trainer who can come to your workplace, then send a tailored quote by email or phone, whichever suits you.

The form asks for:

  • your organisation, a contact person and the training address
  • which unit or units you need, with an approximate number of participants for each
  • your preferred time of day (morning, afternoon, evening or flexible), first preferred date and any alternatives
  • whether you're interested in workplace first aid kits
  • any special requirements

Sessions can run in the evening or on weekends if that suits your roster. Every group quote also includes a free first aid risk assessment. If you're not sure which unit your staff need, call 1300 508 809 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm) and we'll tell you which certificate each role calls for.
